From Minab to the World: PHI Condemns Imperialist Aggression and Expresses Solidarity with the Iranian People
The Green Party of Indonesia condemns the latest aggression against Iran by the United States, Israel, and their allies. The ongoing attacks against Iran, which started on the 28th of February, must be seen as part of capitalist-imperialist efforts to dominate and plunder the world of their wealth. The recent attack on Iran cannot be separated from the kidnapping of President Maduro and the intervention in Venezuela, the blockade and embargo against Cuba, the interventions in Mexico and Colombia, the attempt to annex Greenland, or the tariff wars.
We condemn the murder of civilians in indiscriminate attacks against civilian infrastructure, including the hundreds of students in Minab. The civilian victims of the attacks should not be seen as mere collateral damage. Instead, the targeting of civilians is a deliberate strategy to instill fear and chaos among the population, that has been used by the US and Israel in Palestine, Lebanon, and Venezuela, to name a few.
We denounce the political assasination of Ali Khamenei, the Supreme Leader of Iran, along with his family members, as well as Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the former President of Iran. The assasination of important political, social, and cultural figures is another deliberate strategy to destabilise and bring down the current government of Iran. This strategy will cause nothing but misery and suffering for the Iranian people.
The Iranian people deserve a strong, stable, and democratic government. Not a foreign-backed dictatorship of the Shah. Nor a theo-fascist government of the Clerics. We have seen how popular uprisings in Iran have been met by the government with extreme violence. In the protests following the murder of Mahsa Amini in 2022, at least 400 protestors were killed by Iranian state apparatus. In the ongoing uprising against economic insecurity and political disrepresentation, the state apparatus killed at least 7,000 protestors, in what is the largest massacre of modern Iranian history. This attempt to destabilise Iran’s government will only lead to further crack down on civil society and democratic movement as the state attempts to quell disorder and instability. Our solidarity is firmly with the Iranian people as they fight against imperialism from abroad and authoritarianism at home.
We recognise Iran’s right to defend itself. The retaliatory attacks against Arab states who harbor US military installations and allow their airspace to be used by US-Israeli military operations is a legitimate response against aggression under international law. We regret any civilian casualties that have been inflicted and call on states to respect the inviolability of civilians. We demand an immediate cessation of hostilities and a return to negotiations to resolve any outstanding conflicts.
The Indonesian Government has found itself unable to condemn the attacks. There has been no condemnation, no firm stance against the naked imperial chauvinism of the US and Israel. Instead, Prabowo claimed that he is ready to be a “mediator” – an idea that has been rightly rejected by the Iranian government. Consistent with his stance on various foreign and domestic policies, the President or his Government do not have the moral nor the courage to condemn the imperialism of the US and Israel. On several previous occasions, Prabowo has stated that Israel’s right to exist must be respected. Likewise, his enthusiastic participation in the Board of Peace has shown that Prabowo is not fit to be a mediator, for he has positioned himself as a willing henchman for Western imperialism.
We must recognise that imperialism and its manifestations, including Zionism, are the true enemies of global peace. To achieve lasting peace, the peoples of the world must stand up and unite in solidarity against imperialism in its every manifestation, everywhere.
We reiterate our call that the Indonesian government must withdraw from the Board of Peace, pull its troops from the ISF, cancel the trade deal, and stand in solidarity with the resistance of the Global South against the rising Western imperialism. We also demand the Indonesian Government, through the President and the Foreign Minister, to express Indonesia’s solidarity with the Iranian people.
